Now that the Republican convention is over it is worth noting that Americans hold liberal positions on a wide variety of issues.
A recent Gallup poll shows…
Americans are pro-choice (67 percent)
Americans support the Geneva Conventions with regards to torture (57 percent)
Americans don’t want the government snooping in their bank and internet records (67 percent)
Americans support protecting the environment at the expense of economic growth (55 percent)
Americans believe that global warming is happening (86 percent)
Americans believe that it’s the government’s responsibility to provide health care (69 percent)
Americans support the decriminalization of marijuana (55 percent) and support the legalization of medical marijuana (78 percent)
Americans are opposed to attacking Iran (68 percent, according to a CNN Poll)
Americans support labor unions (60 percent)
Americans want government funding of embryonic stem cell research (56 percent)
Americans believe rich people and corporations aren’t paying enough taxes (66 and 71 percent respectively)

Last week I posted about one of McCain’s surrogates saying that it isn’t fair that insurance companies cover Viagra, but not birth control.
Well, on Monday the Department of Health and Human Services announced that they hope to define contraception as a form of abortion.
In a spectacular act of complicity with the religious right, the Department of Health and Human Services Monday released a proposal that allows any federal grant recipient to obstruct a woman’s access to contraception. In order to do this, the Department is attempting to redefine many forms of contraception, the birth control 40% of Americans use, as abortion. Doing so protects extremists under the Weldon and Church amendments. Those laws prohibit federal grant recipients from requiring employees to help provide or refer for abortion services.

Essential Estrogen has a post up about Sam Brownback using the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade as a fundraising pitch for his PAC.
Like many of you, I pray for the day that the highest court in the land overturns that decision, and this long dark night of abortion on demand comes to an end.
I don’t understand how Rightwingers can think that simply overturning a law would stop all abortions. Until the Right actually gets serious about preventing abortions from happening in the first place, all the pro-life and anti-abortion talk from the Right is just a plea for money.
